Leadership and Management Skills in a Training Course at the College of Engineering

The Women\’s Affairs Unit at the College of Engineering, University of Samarra, organized a specialized training course titled \”Effective Leadership and Management Skills in the Workplace.\” The sessions were conducted by Assistant Professor Ahmed Mohammed Ahmed, Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs, on Sunday and Monday, May 3rd and 4th.
The first day of the course featured an in-depth review of the core concepts that distinguish leadership—based on influence and guidance—from management, which focuses on organization and follow-up. Special emphasis was placed on the importance of \”Self-Leadership\” as a fundamental starting point for professional success through discipline, initiative, and accountability.
The lecturer explained modern leadership styles, such as the participative and supportive models, and how to choose the optimal approach based on the administrative situation. He emphasized that professional excellence is not achieved simply by repeating traditional tasks, but rather through the ability to solve problems and innovate solutions outside of routine frameworks.
Furthermore, the course focused on effective professional communication tools within the university campus, including the arts of active listening, drafting clear administrative messages, and avoiding common mistakes when dealing with colleagues and visitors.
The event concluded with a practical activity analyzing realistic administrative scenarios, which determined that communication professionalism and commitment to administrative hierarchy are the two primary pillars for building a distinguished institutional professional reputation.
It is noteworthy that this course was implemented in accordance with the National Strategic Plan for Iraqi Women 2026, specifically the first paragraph of the second axis regarding \”Economic Development for Iraqi Women,\” under the supervision of Ms. Reem Ali Ahmed, Head of the Women’s Affairs Division at the University Presidency.
