Peer-Reviewed Study in Kalām: Critical Edition of a Text from ʿAqd al-Jawhar fī Sharḥ al-Fiqh al-Akbar

As part of rigorous scholarly efforts to revive Islamic heritage and critically edit its theological texts, a peer-reviewed study has been completed entitled:

“From the Book ʿAqd al-Jawhar fī Sharḥ al-Fiqh al-Akbar by Sulayman Talib al-Salahi al-Rumi al-ʿUthmani (d. 1208 AH), from the statement: ‘Know that kalām is a science concerned with…’ to ‘He gathers their original parts and restores the souls’: A Study, Critical Edition, and Commentary.”

The research was prepared by:

  • Professor Dr. Firas Madallah Majeed
  • Assistant Lecturer Alia Ghanem Al-Falih

This work falls ضمن specialized studies in Islamic theology (ʿIlm al-Kalām), addressing a significant portion of doctrinal discussions, particularly those related to the definition and scope of kalām, as well as issues of resurrection, revival, and the restoration of bodies and souls.

The researchers adopted a precise academic methodology in editing the text, which included:

  • Collating the text with available manuscript copies
  • Tracing theological discussions back to their original sources
  • Explaining unfamiliar terms and clarifying technical kalām terminology
  • Providing scholarly commentary that highlights and compares the views of various scholars

The book ʿAqd al-Jawhar fī Sharḥ al-Fiqh al-Akbar is considered an important commentary on al-Fiqh al-Akbar attributed to Abu Hanifa. It reflects the development of theological thought within the Ottoman Hanafi tradition and showcases the scholarly contributions made in خدمة Islamic creed across centuries.

The study aims to:

  • Highlight the scholarly value of the edited text
  • Serve Islamic theological heritage through critical editions
  • Provide a reliable academic resource for researchers in Islamic studies

This work represents a valuable addition to the field of creed studies and a meaningful contribution to the advancement of critically edited heritage research within the academic community.
