University of Samarra Expands Sustainable Academic Programs
The University of Samarra has announced the introduction of 25 academic programs at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels, all embedded with sustainability concepts and designed to address both global and local environmental challenges. These programs cover diverse fields such as applied chemistry, biotechnology, sustainable architecture, biology (biodiversity and renewable energy), geography (climate change and sustainable development), and green economy.
The university emphasized that these programs are part of a comprehensive curriculum refresh aimed at integrating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into academic content. Sustainability concepts have been incorporated into nearly 30% of all courses, while 40% of graduation projects are now required to provide practical solutions to pressing environmental issues such as water scarcity and desertification.
The initiative has been supported by intensive faculty training to ensure the effective delivery of “Green Education” standards across both scientific and humanities colleges, reinforcing the university’s role as a leading institution in sustainable education in Iraq.
