The College of Agriculture Organizes a Seminar on the Impact of Chemical Pesticides on Humans and the Environment
The College of Agriculture at the University of Samarra organized a scientific seminar titled “Chemical Pesticides and Their Residues,” presented by a group of the college’s faculty members specializing in agricultural sciences.
The seminar organizers aimed to explain the concept of chemical pesticides, their types, and their uses in the agricultural field, while clarifying the risks of pesticide residues on human health and the environment.
Assist. Lect. Yousif Ali Mohammed) presented the sources of crop contamination by pesticides, the mechanism of residue transfer through the food chain, and their short-term and long-term toxic effects.
Meanwhile, Assist. Lect. (Ayman Khamis Ali) focused on the importance of adhering to recommended doses and the safety period (pre-harvest interval) before harvesting.
He also highlighted the role of awareness and agricultural extension in reducing the risks resulting from pesticide misuse, pointing out at the same time the importance of safe alternatives and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to achieve sustainable and safe agriculture.
In turn, Assist. Lect. (Bilal Saad Mutlak) recommended strengthening oversight on pesticide use, spreading health and environmental awareness among farmers and consumers, and encouraging scientific research in the field of reducing pesticide residues in agricultural products.
