A Workshop at the University of Samarra Explores the Implementation of Plagiarism Percentage Regulations

The Department of Scientific Affairs at the University of Samarra organized a workshop titled “Implementing Regulations on Permissible Plagiarism Percentages in the Turnitin Program,” presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Abdul Sattar Abdullah Hamad.

The workshop targeted staff members working in plagiarism detection units across the university’s departments, aiming to train them on identifying plagiarism resulting from artificial intelligence (AI) and recognizing warning flags, in accordance with the standards set by the Ministry.

Dr. Abdullah explained the possibility of allowing the use of AI applications, such as ChatGPT and other programs, in research papers, theses, and dissertations written exclusively in English, provided that the AI-generated plagiarism does not exceed 25%.

Additionally, the speaker emphasized the necessity of uploading and storing all research in the Turnitin program starting from 2020 to the present, in order to maintain the quality and authenticity of scientific output and safeguard researchers’ intellectual property rights.

It is worth noting that the workshop was conducted in response to directives from the Research and Development Directorate of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, as per its official communication issued on May 20.
