A Faculty Member at the University of Samarra Publishes Research in a Q1 Scopus-Indexed Journal

The Assist. Lect. Sura Hilal Ahmed, has published a research paper in a Scopus-indexed journal titled:
\\\”Selective Senolysis of 5FU-Induced Senescent Colorectal Cancer Cells by Piceatannol via Mitochondrial Depolarization and AIF-Dependent Apoptosis.\\\”

The study was published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, a Q1-ranked journal published by MDPI (Volume 26, Issue 18, published on September 18, 2025). The journal holds an Impact Factor of 4.9 and a CiteScore of 9.0.

The research aims to investigate the senolytic activity of Piceatannol against colorectal cancer cells that have entered a state of senescence (cellular aging) following exposure to the chemotherapy drug 5-Fluorouracil (5FU).

The results demonstrated that subsequent treatment with Piceatannol selectively induced programmed cell death (apoptosis) in senescent cells. Meanwhile, its effect remained limited on non-senescent cells or mutant cells resistant to senescence.
