A Seminar in the Department of Geography Demonstrates the Causes of Water Scarcity in Iraq and Their Solutions

The Department of Geography at the College of Education for Human Sciences at the University of Samarra demonstrated “Water Scarcity in Iraq: Causes and Solutions between Reality and Sustainable Planning,” in a scientific seminar presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. (Hassan Ali Musleh) and Dr. (Noureddine Faisal Ibrahim).

The seminar aimed to discuss the challenges of the water crisis experienced by Iraq and its repercussions on water, food, and economic security, while presenting planning visions to address the crisis according to the foundations of sustainability.

-Hassan- presented the most prominent reasons for the decline in water resources, foremost among them the regional factors associated with the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, alongside the effects of climate change, rising temperatures, and fluctuating rainfall, as well as internal water management challenges and the reliance on traditional irrigation methods that increase waste rates.

Meanwhile, -Noureddine- reviewed ways to treat the crisis, represented by adopting integrated management of water resources, updating irrigation techniques, and strengthening water diplomacy, in addition to developing non-conventional resources through desalination and the reuse of treated water, and building accurate databases and early warning systems to support planning decisions.

On the other hand, one of the department’s students participated in preparing educational brochures distributed to the attendees, in a step adopted by the department to direct students toward scientific research and enhance the culture of water awareness as a shared national responsibility.

In turn, the lecturers added that the transition from crisis management to sustainability management represents the primary entry point to ensuring the rights of future generations to a vital resource that forms the pillar of development and stability.
