A Workshop at the College of Engineering Discusses Confronting Climate Challenges through Resilient City Strategies
The College of Engineering at Samarra University discussed “Resilient Cities in the Face of Climate Change: From Floods to Storms,” in a workshop presented by two postgraduate students under the supervision of Dr. Suhail Najm Abdullah.
The workshop focused on the reality of Iraqi cities in light of accelerating climate changes, based on international indicators issued by the IPCC and UNEP to assess the impacts of heatwaves, droughts, and flash floods on infrastructure and the national economy, particularly in the water and energy sectors.
The two students reviewed mechanisms for enhancing urban resilience according to UN-Habitat standards, while discussing leading global initiatives such as the MCR2030 program to inspire applied solutions that suit local specificities.
The workshop concluded by emphasizing the necessity of integrating sustainability with resilience in urban planning, as it is a fundamental pillar for ensuring the construction of safe cities capable of endurance and recovery in the face of future environmental crises.
