College of Engineering Discusses Climate Change and Sustainability Strategies

The College of Engineering at Samarra University organized a specialized awareness lecture presented by Lecturer Dr. Mohammed Jameel Mahdi, Head of the Department of Architecture, which discussed the “dangerous dimensions of climate change resulting from human activities and the burning of fossil fuels.”

The lecturer reviewed the direct threats facing the environment in Iraq, citing digital data confirming that the desertification rate has reached 69.5% of the country’s area, in addition to the worsening of dust storms and the drying of the marshes.

This situation places food and water security in danger and makes Iraq at the forefront of countries vulnerable to climate instability.

At the same time, Mohammed highlighted the joint government efforts emerging from the “National Initiative,” which resulted in the formation of hundreds of task forces to prepare studies on transitioning toward energy-efficient buildings and intensifying afforestation campaigns.

Furthermore, the lecture included the circulation of a strategic vision that encompassed a package of legislative and technical solutions; most prominent among them were the criminalization of land bulldozing and the adoption of modern irrigation systems.

The lecture concluded by emphasizing the necessity of activating the (ISO 50001) standard for rationalizing energy consumption, alongside a call to invest in the “Green Climate Fund” to enhance renewable energy projects and waste recycling.
