Professor from University of Samarra Discusses the Impact of Globalization on the Arabic Language at an International Scientific Conference in Baghdad

Assistant Professor Dr. Siham Hassan Jawad, a faculty member at the College of Arts at the University of Samarra, participated in the proceedings of the first international scientific conference titled “The Arabic Language: Present Challenges and Future Prospects,” organized by the Iraqi Translators Association in cooperation with several local and international institutions in Baghdad earlier this April.

Dr. Hassan contributed with her research paper titled “Classical Arabic and the Patterns of Globalization,” in which she addressed the challenges facing the Arabic language amid the increasing dominance of the English language due to globalization, which poses a threat to the linguistic and cultural identity of Arab peoples.

She emphasized that linguistic globalization aims to impose the most powerful language at the expense of national languages, citing the views of several scholars, including Dr. Nasr al-Din al-Asad, who stressed the importance of political and educational leaders recognizing Arabic as a pillar of identity and preserving it accordingly.

She pointed out that the decline of Classical Arabic is now evident in media, education, and daily communication, to the extent that many Arabs take pride in mastering foreign languages while neglecting their mother tongue.

Jawad stressed that protecting the Arabic language is a collective responsibility, while also calling for positive use of globalization to serve Arabic—through curriculum development, increasing the presence of Classical Arabic in the media, and training qualified personnel capable of effectively delivering correct Arabic to audiences.
