Samarra University Addresses Unemployment and its Negative Effects on Social Peace
The University Psychological Guidance Division at the Rectorship of Samarra University organized an awareness symposium on “Unemployment and its Negative Effects on Social Peace,” presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Jinan Mohammed Hussein, a faculty member at the College of Education for Human Sciences, with the attendance of Vice Rector for Scientific Affairs, Professor Dr. Kamal Hussein Ahmed.
Dr. Mohammed opened the symposium by defining unemployment as a social and economic phenomenon characterized by individuals’ inability to secure job opportunities despite seeking them, explaining its forms and classifications. This included classical, cyclical, and structural unemployment (which represents a gap between the skills of the unemployed and the labor market requirements), in addition to hidden and disguised unemployment (which is represented by employment exceeding the need compared to productivity).
The presenter focused on the causes of the widespread phenomenon of unemployment, embodied in the supply and demand gap, the use of robots instead of manual labor, the large disparity between population growth and job expansion, and the rise in interest rates and slow economic growth.
On the other hand, the symposium clarified the impact of unemployment on the individual and society, such as psychological stress, anxiety, and depression, increased rates of illness, and increased financial burdens and debts. Furthermore, it contributes to higher rates of theft and violence crimes, and family problems.
In turn, the lecturer recommended confronting unemployment by encouraging investment and creating new job opportunities, as well as improving the quality of education, supporting entrepreneurship and innovation, in addition to integrating governmental and community efforts to protect societies.
