The University Psychological Guidance Division at the Rectorship of the University of Samarra, in cooperation with the Permanent National Committee for Community Awareness and Guidance affiliated with the Prime Minister’s Office, organized an awareness seminar on “Domestic Violence and its Effects on Students – Risks and Ways to Confront It.” The seminar was presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Adnan Talfah Mohammed and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jenan Mohammed Hussein.
Dr. Mohammed began the seminar by defining violence as the commission of harmful acts against others. These acts may be perpetrated by an individual or a group possessing power and control, affecting the victim’s behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and physical functions. He also explained the motives for domestic violence, which include self-related, economic, and daily life stress factors, as well as social reasons.
For her part, Dr. Hussein clarified the types of domestic violence, including psychological violence, which is embodied by exposure to harmful words that cause self-contempt in the victim. Similarly, she addressed sexual violence, defining it as any act or statement that infringes upon human dignity and invades bodily privacy, whether it is sexual or physical violence.
In a related context, the lecturers recommended calling for compassion among family members, establishing care and rehabilitation centers for those who have suffered from domestic violence, in addition to treating family members suffering from mental illnesses by referring them to specialists, and intensifying the holding of awareness training courses to change the prevailing view towards violence.
