Seminar on the Role of Authentic Islamic Thought in Combating Ideological Extremism at the College of Education for Humanities
The College of Education for Humanities at the University of Samarra organized a scholarly seminar on the role of authentic Islamic thought in combating ideological extremism. The seminar was presented by professor Dr. Wissam Hussein Salman and professor Dr. Taha Khalid Arab, faculty members in the Department of Qur’anic Sciences and Islamic Education.
Dr. Salman focused on the role of Islamic thought in addressing the phenomenon of ideological extremism and its negative effects on society. He highlighted authentic Islamic thought, derived from its correct origins, as a realistic and ideal thought that is suitable for every time and place, and capable of providing a fundamental solution to emerging problems, including ideological extremism. He also noted that the Holy Qur’an addressed this issue in several texts, calling for the unification of ranks, word, and the human message.
Dr. Arab, on the other hand, addressed the importance of the governmental and institutional role in confronting extremism, through intensifying the efforts of the Ministries of Defense and Interior, as well as educational and judicial institutions. He also emphasized the role of religious endowments (Awqaf) in spreading religious awareness and moderate thought, in addition to the role of positive media in establishing a culture of tolerance and coexistence among the citizens of the nation.
In conclusion, the lecturers recommended the necessity of activating the moderate religious discourse and disseminating the authentic, moderate Islamic thought that promotes the values of peace and love while rejecting fanaticism and extremism.
