The Department of Archaeology Discusses the Impact of Terrorism on the Country’s Cultural Heritage
The Department of Archaeology at the College of Arts, University of Samarra, organized a cultural symposium titled “Extremism and Terrorism and Their Impact on the Cultural Heritage of Mesopotamia.” The symposium was presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Rasha Abdulwahab Mahmoud.
Dr. Abdulwahab reviewed the destruction inflicted upon archaeological and heritage sites in areas affected by armed conflicts with terrorist organizations, highlighting the resulting distortion of the archaeological heritage.
She explained that the intellectual extremism adopted by terrorist groups leads to the distortion of cultural heritage, altering the national, humanitarian, and historical identity of the country.
Dr. Abdulwahab recommended the necessity of addressing intellectual extremism within academic and educational institutions and intensifying dialogue sessions targeting society, particularly the youth. She emphasized that ideas must be countered with ideas.
