The University Psychological Counseling Division Organizes a Seminar on Psychological Prevention of Suicide
The University Psychological Counseling Division at the Rectorship of the University of Samarra organized an awareness seminar titled “Suicide and its Prevention According to an Islamic-Psychological Perspective,” presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Adnan Talfah Mohammed, head of the division, and Dr. Waleed Miteab Ali.
The seminar organizers sought to raise awareness within the university community regarding confronting suicide, nourishing university students with sound ideas, and strengthening psychological and religious aspects.
The seminar focused on the causes leading to suicide, represented by psychological reasons such as anxiety, depression, and psychological trauma; social reasons including family disintegration, bullying, and social isolation; in addition to economic reasons, among them poverty, unemployment, and the accumulation of debts.
For his part, Adnan presented the most important pillars of psychological immunization to confront suicide, including improving the family environment and reducing problems that lead to psychological disorders within the family, as well as confronting extremist ideas, avoiding drifting into devious paths, and adopting moderate ideas.
From a religious perspective,Waleed clarified the legal evidence (Sharia) on the prohibition of suicide, using clear and explicit Quranic evidence on the prohibition of taking one’s life, especially since the objectives of Islamic law (Maqasid al-Sharia) in prohibiting suicide are based on the preservation of the Five Necessities.
