College of Engineering Raises Awareness on Preventing Violent Extremism in a Workshop

The Human Rights Unit at the College of Engineering, University of Samarra, organized a specialized workshop titled “International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism as and when Conducive to Terrorism.”

The workshop presented the core concept of extremism as a transgression of the boundaries of moderation and balance advocated by Islamic Sharia, as stated in the Quranic verse: “And thus we have made you a just community.” Notably, the Holy Quran was a pioneer in rejecting extremism long before international conventions.

Furthermore, the dimensions of intellectual and behavioral extremism were discussed, alongside an explanation of the role played by Western powers in reshaping concepts to serve their interests and dominance, while falsifying the historical truths of the Islamic nation.

The lecturer emphasized the extreme gravity of this phenomenon, which threatens social peace and destroys economic foundations, noting that terrorism is the inevitable result of behavioral extremism fueled by ignorance, poverty, and attacks on sacred values.

In the same context, the workshop presenter recommended focusing on spreading awareness, improving living standards, directing energies toward productivity, and consolidating the values of justice and mercy, which are the basis for restoring the Muslim community’s role in reform.

It is worth noting that the workshop was attended by the Dean of the College, heads of scientific departments, faculty members, as well as heads of administrative units and a group of the college’s staff and students.
