A lecturer at Samarra University publishes an article about biodiversity in Al-Mustaqbal newspaper.

Assist. Lect. Rasha Raad Abdullah (the lecturer) at the College of Education for Humanities at the University of Samarra wrote a journalistic article about (biodiversity), in which she defined, in its opening, biodiversity as the set of different life forms existing on planet Earth.

Rasha added the role of this diversity in maintaining ecological balance and supporting essential environmental services, as it is an important source of food and medicine, and it contributes to enhancing the ability of living organisms to adapt to climate changes, as well as its contribution to promoting tourism and cultural activities.

In a related context, the author touched upon the natural factors affecting biodiversity, including desertification, which is considered one of the most important causes leading to the deterioration of biological diversity, as it results from the spread of drought in agricultural lands, in addition to volcanoes, earthquakes, storms, and floods and their role in causing an imbalance in the ecological balance and biodiversity.

On the other hand, the article included the contributions of human factors to the deterioration of biodiversity, such as the illegal cutting of trees and the excessive hunting of animals, leading to the disappearance of some species of plants, animals, and microorganisms.

While the lecturer recommended, in the conclusion of her article, the necessity of increasing protected areas such as national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and protected marine areas, to preserve natural habitats and their biological diversity, in addition to supporting environmentally friendly practices such as sustainable agriculture and rational forest management, and taking effective measures to combat climate change by reducing carbon emissions and setting strict standards for emissions resulting from industries, transport, and energy production.
