Awareness Campaign Launched to Reduce Smoking on University Campus

The Department of Media and Government Communication, in collaboration with the Department of Affairs at the Presidency of Samarra University, launched an awareness campaign last weekend to combat and reduce smoking within the university campus.

This initiative follows directives from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the circulars issued by the university’s presidency aimed at curbing smoking in public places and holding violators accountable.

As part of the campaign, department staff placed awareness posters throughout the university’s corridors and colleges last weekend. These posters carried the slogan “Contribute to Preventing Smoking on Campus” and included warnings and applicable laws designed to limit the phenomenon.

The campaign’s main goal is to raise awareness about the dangers of smoking and encourage all groups to avoid and quit smoking, particularly within the university campus and enclosed spaces. The initiative is based on Anti-Smoking Law No. 19 of 2012, specifically Article 4, which prohibits smoking in public places, including government buildings, ministries, educational and health institutions, airports, companies, and factories across all provinces.

In turn, the Department of Media and Government Communication at the university presidency urges individuals to avoid smoking due to its health, environmental, and social risks. Additionally, the Legal Affairs Department will monitor violators and refer them to the relevant committees in accordance with the applicable Iraqi law.
