Assistant Professor Dr. Seham Hassan Jawad, a faculty member in the College of Arts at the University of Samarra, participated in the proceedings of the 10th International Conference on the Arabic Language, held in Dubai from October 10 to 12, 2024. Dr. Hassan presented a research paper titled “Deconstructing the Jewish Parable in Historical Imagination: The Novel Embrace of the Serpents by Algerian Novelist Ezzedine Djelaoudji.” She was among over 2,000 researchers from 80 Arab and foreign countries, highlighting the conference’s significance as a prominent global event in linguistic and literary studies.

Djelaoudji’s novel, Embrace of the Serpents, is recognized as one of the most prominent works in Algerian and Arab literature, distinguished by its creativity and the richness of its historical references. It documents an important era in Algerian history, from the French occupation to the Liberation Revolution, skillfully blending reality and fiction in a captivating narrative filled with intrigue and suspense.

The novel also examines the role of Jews in Algeria during the French campaign, portraying the Algerian Jewish character from a perspective that accuses it of betrayal and collaboration with the French colonizers, which ultimately led to Algeria falling under occupation. Notably, the novel won the Katara Prize for Arabic Novel in its eighth edition in 2022.
