Al-Zawraa Iraqi official newspaper publishes a report on the activities of Samarra University to abort thoughts of suicide

The official government newspaper, Al-Zawraa, published a report on Samarra University\’s activities in combating suicide ideas in its issue No. (8593), published on Thursday, January 22, 2026.

Under diligent ministerial guidance and based on the government program\’s policy, Samarra University—with all its colleges and departments—has commenced the implementation of a comprehensive and integrated campaign to confront suicide ideas and abort attempts—even if they are internal—within the souls of students, employees, and professors alike.

University Opposes Suicide Through Awareness:
The university launched this comprehensive campaign from within the campus because the university encompasses various segments of society. According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali Mouloud Fadel (Head of the Media Department) at the College of Arts, Samarra University, who stated: \”Samarra University has directed all its formations to organize awareness campaigns, educational seminars, and instructional advertisements that oppose the idea of suicide and stand against it.

The university administration focused on activating and enhancing this awareness within the university, believing that students have contact with various segments of society, and that influencing students will reflect on these segments. Consequently, the desired goal of this comprehensive campaign will be achieved.\”

Adhering to Religious Teachings and Holding the Trust of Life:
In turn, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Mahmoud Allow (Dean of the College of Arts at the university), when asked about the role of university leaders in dealing with such a dangerous phenomenon that threatens social life, explained: \”All college deanships have directed all their branches to stand against this imminent danger to society, while activating the role of educational and psychological counseling within the campus and among the study benches.\” At the same time, Allow emphasized \”the necessity of adhering to the teachings of the true Islamic religion, embracing its lofty values and principles, and following the example of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He also stressed that society and its leaders must pay attention to the ideas alien to it, arriving from \’forces of evil,\’ stand against them, and prevent their spread.
This is the essence of what the university sought in its comprehensive campaign against suicide. The College of Arts and its departments have implemented many seminars, workshops, and media campaigns regarding this.\”
Periodic Meetings and Awareness Campaigns Against the Phenomenon:

In the same context, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Adnan Talfah Mohammed (Head of the University Psychological Counseling Division) stated in his speech: \”The university, through all its formations, works continuously to organize a variety of activities that illustrate the causes of suicide and its repercussions on the individual and society. The activities included distributing brochures, holding cultural awareness seminars, workshops, and periodic meetings, in addition to organizing field visits to the internal dormitories for both female and male students by the division and the Social Research Division to identify some obstacles facing students and work to overcome them.
Furthermore, an email was established specifically for the University Psychological Counseling Division to facilitate student communication with the division and encourage them to express their feelings and present their problems for resolution by university officials.\”

On the other hand, student Rand Mohammed Shaker believes that: \”Suicide is the result of psychological imbalance and severe pressure. Resorting to it is not a scientific or realistic solution because such an idea is a permanent loss of a life that can be saved through treatment, psychological support, and early intervention from the family and the university.\”
Life is a blessing that deserves to endure for human beings so they may develop the earth and leave a good impact on it, presenting themselves as role models and personalities worth remembering. They should not end their souls or deprive them of the chance for life or living, which God has entrusted to them. This is how everyone whose soul suggests leaning toward suicide or passing through the path of this dangerous malice—which all religions and heavenly teachings have rejected, and every sound mind has dismissed—should think. The Iraqi government and all its ministries have stood against it, and will continue to abort its ideas and tame its adopters. Among all these collective institutions, Samarra University stood as a model.
Note: The report was prepared by a student in the Media Department at the College of Arts (Teeba Mazen Tawfiq) as part of their practical lessons, through which the department seeks to refine their applied skills in various media fields.
