Master’s Thesis at the University of Samarra Discusses Comparative Genetic Sequencing of Isolated Dry and Wet Leishmaniasis Ulcers

A master’s thesis at the College of Applied Sciences, University of Samarra, entitled “Comparative Genetic Sequencing of Isolated Dry and Wet Leishmaniasis Ulcers from Infected Individuals in the City of Samarra,” was presented by student Ahmed Abdul Rahim Hassan.

In his thesis, the student aimed to diagnose infections using immunological tests “IgG, IgM,” and to study the prevalence of the parasite in the city of Samarra according to criteria such as age, residence, months of the year, type of ulcer, and location of infection. Additionally, he measured the levels of cytokines and immune receptors “TLR2, TLR4.”

The student concluded that cutaneous leishmaniasis is a prevalent disease in the city of Samarra, affecting both females and males equally. However, the number of infections is higher among males due to the nature of their work. Furthermore, the incidence of wet ulcers is higher than that of dry ulcers among those infected, due to the spread of the L. major species, which causes wet ulcers.
