A faculty member at the University of Samarra publishes a new book documenting the script of Uthman Qur’ans by Imam al-Birkiwi.
Professor Dr. Iyad Salim Saleh, a faculty member in the College of Arts at the University of Samarra, has published a new book with Al-Ghothani House for Qur’anic Studies in Syria, Beirut, and Turkey. The book is titled “A Treatise on the Script of the Six Uthman Qur’ans by Imam al-Birkiwi: Study and Verification.”
The book offers an in-depth study and scholarly verification of one of the most important heritage works discussing the science of Qur’anic script. This science focuses on documenting the Qur’anic verses in the manner they were revealed and preserved from the time of the Prophet, through their compilation during the era of the Rightly Guided Caliphs.
The book highlights the significance and value of this science in preserving the Qur’anic text. It also references the efforts of Muslim scholars in documenting the words and letters of the Qur’an, establishing an independent discipline called “the Science of Qur’anic Script.” They diligently documented the spelling of the Uthman Qur’ans, written by the order of Caliph Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), making this documentation a reference for subsequent Qur’anic manuscripts.
In his book, the author sheds light on the efforts of Imam al-Birkiwi (died 981 AH), one of the prominent scholars of the Ottoman state, in preparing the treatise. He relied on eleven handwritten manuscripts, conducting a meticulous verification to present the text accurately and reliably, enriched with scholarly comments and explanations that add value to the study of Qur’anic script.
The Media and Government Communication Department congratulates Professor Dr. Iyad Salim Saleh on his new scholarly work, wishing him continued success in his academic and research endeavors.
