A Seminar at Samarra University Proposes Fundamental Solutions to the Phenomenon of Harassment
The University Psychological Counseling Unit at the Rectorship of the University of Samarra organized an awareness seminar titled “The Phenomenon of Sexual Harassment: Causes and Solutions,” presented by Prof. Dr. Adnan Talfah Mohammed (Head of the Unit).
The seminar commenced by defining harassment as unwelcome acts that violate the privacy of individuals, starting with simple harassment and hints, and escalating to higher levels of molestation.
During the session, Adnan identified the types of harassment, embodied in winking, whistling, gesturing with specific hand signals, and closely following [victims] while walking, as well as attacking women or obstructing their path.
Additionally, he outlined the causes of the phenomenon, represented by repression, poor upbringing, lack of morals, the absence of legal protection or accountability, and leniency toward the harasser.
Furthermore, the lecturer pointed out several methods to confront harassment, including ignoring the harasser, maintaining calmness, and drawing people’s attention if the harassment continues, as well as avoiding entering into a conflict with the harasser.
The seminar concluded by emphasizing the documentation of everything related to the harassment incident, such as the date, time, and location. This includes keeping copies or taking screenshots of emails, texts, images, or social media posts related to the harassment. Moreover, it stressed filing an official complaint with the Cybercrime Investigation Department to ensure personal protection from electronic harassers.
