A Workshop at the College of Administration and Economics Highlights the Importance of Tolerance in Combating Violent Extremism
The College of Administration and Economics at the University of Samarra organized a two-day workshop titled “The Importance of Tolerance in Combating Violent Extremism.” The workshop was delivered by Assistant Lecturer Marwa Abd Jwair and Assistant Lecturer Alya Abdul-Latif Abdulqadir, and took place in mid-October.
Abd emphasized the importance of tolerance as one of the fundamental pillars in addressing violent extremism and building a cohesive and secure society.
Meanwhile, Abdul-Latif discussed a set of effective strategies to promote a culture of tolerance, including the role of education in instilling the values of dialogue and acceptance of others from an early age, as well as fostering community partnerships among governmental, civil, and religious institutions to strengthen collective awareness. She also insisted on the importance of the empowerment of youth as agents of change and bearers of positive messages.
Participants engaged actively in discussions on spreading the values of tolerance and mutual understanding, highlighting their role in promoting social cohesion, reducing feelings of injustice and exclusion that often lead to extremism, and providing positive alternatives for young people that enhance belonging and coexistence.
The workshop concluded with an affirmation that tolerance is not a sign of weakness but rather an intellectual and moral strength that helps protect societies from division and extremism, paving the way toward sustainable peace and comprehensive development.
