Combating Intellectual Extremism: A Seminar by the College of Engineering

The College of Engineering at the University of Samarra organized an awareness seminar on “Intellectual Extremism and Ways to Confront It,” delivered by Dr. Rabab Fadel Khalaf, a faculty member in the College of Education at the University of Samarra.

The seminar focused on explaining the concept of extremism from both linguistic and terminological perspectives and reviewed its implications in the Qur’an and the Sunnah. It also addressed Islam’s stance on extremism—described as “ghuluw” (exaggeration)—as the term most expressive of extremism, in addition to highlighting the manifestations of intellectual extremism, such as fanaticism and intolerance of differing opinions.

Dr. Khalaf also explained the causes leading to intellectual extremism, including the failure to consult scholars and religious experts, and relying solely on self-education.

She emphasized the need to reject extremism and uphold moderation and balance, citing verses from the Qur’an and authentic prophetic traditions that advocate for a middle path and reject extremism in thought and religion.

This event is part of a series of awareness seminars organized by the College of Engineering to address issues important to society and to promote the values of tolerance, moderation, and peaceful coexistence.
