Common Linguistic Errors Addressed in an Educational Seminar at the Arabic Department, College of Arts

The Arabic Department at the College of Arts, University of Samarra, organized a seminar on “Common Linguistic Errors and Their Impact on Official Correspondence,” presented by Dr. Majid Faisal Mahdi, a faculty member in the department.

Dr. Mahdi explained that many commonly used Arabic words are incorrect or misunderstood in terms of meaning, and their connotations often differ from their correct definitions. He also highlighted that social media users frequently add silent letters to certain words, such as writing “لاكن” instead of “لكن,” “هاذا” instead of “هذا,” and “ذالك” instead of “ذلك.”

Regarding official communication, Dr. Faisal emphasized the importance of having official documents reviewed by linguistic proofreaders before they are issued or circulated. This is to prevent linguistic errors from spreading through official documents, which are expected to maintain a high standard of accuracy and formality.

On a broader scale, the seminar presenter recommended developing linguistic skills starting with students and extending to employees. This can be achieved through educational workshops and training seminars conducted by experts.
