Department of Media at the College of Arts Launches First Edition of “Mediology” Event
The Department of Media at the College of Arts, University of Samarra, launched the inaugural “Mediology 1” event on Thursday, April 17, 2025. The event was organized in collaboration with the Department of Media and Government Communication at the university presidency, under the patronage of Professor Dr. Sabah Alawi Khalaf (University President), the supervision of Professor Dr. Ahmed Mahmoud Alou (Dean of the College of Arts), and the coordination of Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Mouloud Fadel (Head of the Media Department).
The event began with verses from the Holy Qur’an, followed by a moment of silence to honor the martyrs of Iraq and Gaza—highlighting the significance of Arab unity and solidarity in every gathering and occasion. The Iraqi national anthem was then played, and attendees stood in reverence and respect.
Professor Dr. Sabah Alawi Khalaf delivered a speech emphasizing the importance of media marketing and the value of practicing the profession with passion, not merely as a field of study. He stressed the necessity of mastering language, describing it as the foundation upon which journalists worldwide rely, as it shapes their public image. He also highlighted the ethical dimensions of journalism, especially in an era where digital media tools are widely accessible. With the rapid transformation in communication methods and the rise of artificial intelligence in journalism, combating misinformation and fabricated content has become a significant challenge.
Professor Dr. Ahmed Mahmoud Alou praised the efforts of the Media Department’s faculty and students, acknowledging their dedication since the department’s establishment. He commended the faculty’s role in developing and empowering students both academically and professionally, culminating in this unique event showcasing their work.
Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Mouloud Fadel explained the origin of the term “Mediology,” which means “the science of media.” He announced that “Mediology” would become an annual tradition to present students’ projects and productions. He stressed the importance of integrating theoretical and practical aspects in media education, noting that the department’s vision includes field application of the curriculum, setting it apart from peer departments in other Iraqi universities. The department has made remarkable achievements in various areas such as news writing, photography, video editing, television programming, investigative journalism, and report preparation.
The event featured student-produced television works, which were covered by several major local media outlets. These included investigative reports, talk shows, and short films. Additionally, students’ printed work was exhibited, comprising journalistic articles, certificates of participation in training courses offered by prominent media organizations, scientific research papers, printed materials, and student magazines.
At the end of the event, commemorative shields for “Mediology 1” were presented to college deans and faculty members. Over 30 outstanding students received certificates of appreciation, celebrating their creativity and excellence in various journalistic fields. This reflects the department’s commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and distinction in a dynamic and supportive academic environment.
