Promoting Women’s Political Awareness: College of Law Holds Training Workshop on Women’s Electoral Rights

The College of Law at the University of Samarra organized a two-day training workshop on “Women’s Rights in Voting, Candidacy, and Electoral Laws”, presented by Dr. Rana Latif Jassim, a faculty member at the college. The workshop aimed to clarify the most important political rights of women, such as the right to vote and the right to run for office.

Women’s political rights are considered a cornerstone reflecting the extent of a country’s progress in democratic practices. It is not enough to merely endorse these rights in constitutional texts; rather, they must be actively applied in real-life practices to ensure the broadest possible participation of women in political life.

The course included a detailed explanation of women’s political participation and its relationship with both the individual and the state. It also addressed the eligibility requirements for candidacy, voting regulations, and the key safeguards ensuring that these laws operate within the framework of freedom, democracy, and equality.

In the same context, the lecturer emphasized the importance of organizing continuous awareness campaigns to improve the political status of women and guarantee their political rights. She also highlighted the need to foster genuine feminist and societal awareness regarding women’s issues and to demonstrate the state’s responsibility in supporting these causes and providing an environment that overcomes the obstacles hindering women’s political participation.
