Samarra University Hosts Workshop on Spinal Injuries
The College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences at the University of Samarra organized a workshop on “Spinal Injuries,” presented by Assistant Lecturer Mohammed Abdulsalam Fadhil, a faculty member at the college.
The organizers aimed to address the urgent need within the athletic and professional communities to raise awareness and deepen understanding of the various aspects related to spinal injuries.
The spine is considered one of the most vital and delicate structures in the human body. Beyond its role in supporting the skeletal framework, it serves as the primary channel protecting the spinal cord, which is the central axis for transmitting nerve signals between the brain and the rest of the body.
The speaker explained the types of spinal injuries, including those caused by traffic accidents, sports-related injuries, excessive occupational strain, and degenerative conditions associated with aging. He also described the anatomical and functional structure of the spine, along with common spinal injuries such as herniated discs, vertebral fractures, and spinal cord contusions.
Abdulsalam emphasized that any injury to this complex structure can lead to severe functional, physical, and psychological consequences, potentially resulting in loss of movement, sensation, or complete disability.
The workshop also covered the basics of first aid and immediate stabilization of bones and joints, modern diagnostic techniques such as MRI and CT imaging, and the stages of motor and neural rehabilitation. Additionally, it highlighted the essential roles of physical and occupational therapy in the recovery of these functions.
