Two Instructors from Samarra University Publish a New Book on Umayyad Chaste Love Poetry
Prof. Dr. Kamal Abdul Fattah Hassan and Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ahmed Shihab, instructors at the College of Islamic Sciences, Samarra University, have published a new book with Dhaqa\’ir al-Turath Publishing House, titled \”Al-Hasan al-Jamil min Akhbar al-Qaysayn wa Jamil\” (The Beautiful Good News of the Two Qayses and Jamil).
The authors sought to trace the experiences of chaste love poetry among three of the most prominent poets of the Umayyad era, namely: Qays ibn al-Mulawwah (Qays Layla), Qays ibn Dhurayh (Qays Lubna), and Jamil ibn Ma\’mar (Jamil Buthaynah).
The two instructors approached chaste love poetry as a cultural subject reflecting social and cultural aspects within the Arab environment, focusing on the emotional experiences of the poets as models of chaste love poetry in the Umayyad era.
Furthermore, the selection of poetic texts in this work was distinguished by a high degree of balance and precision, demonstrated by the authors\’ care in selecting poetic models that sincerely express the emotional experience of these poets, whereas it was observed that some of the reports and stories included in the book…
It is noted that this book represents an important scientific addition to the field of literary studies, contributing to a re-reading of Umayyad chaste love poetry within its cultural and social context, and providing rich scholarly material for researchers and those interested in ancient Arabic literature.
