College of Education for Pure Sciences Demonstrates the Impact of Antibiotics on the Liver and Kidneys in a Training Course
The Department of Chemistry at the College of Education for Pure Sciences at the University of Samarra organized a training course on “Antibiotics and Their Impact on the Liver and Kidneys,” presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. (Nuha Ali Hadi) and Assoc. Prof. (Sara Saad Mohammed Jawad).
Nuha defined the importance of antibiotics used in treating infections caused by microorganisms, which work to kill germs or inhibit their growth, including within their scope bacteria, fungi, and parasites, as they belong to a broader group known as antimicrobial compounds.
Meanwhile, Sara explained the important therapeutic role played by antibiotics, in addition to a number of side effects, which eliminate both beneficial and harmful bacteria together, making the intestines vulnerable to digestive disorders such as abdominal pain.
In a related context, the course pointed out the impact of some antibiotics on liver functions through blood tests known as liver function tests, which necessitates that those with liver diseases exercise caution in using certain antibiotics.
In turn, the two lecturers warned of some antibiotics that cause kidney failure as a result of their toxic effects on the kidneys, as statistics indicate that acute kidney failure caused by medications may occur in at least one out of every five cases.
It is noteworthy that health authorities have called for the necessity of using antibiotics according to medical instructions and under the supervision of specialists to avoid their complications and maintain patient safety.
