Seminar at the College of Arts Discusses Tolstoy’s Epic “War and Peace”
The Department of Russian Language at the College of Arts, University of Samarra, held a scientific seminar on the novel “War and Peace” by Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy, presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Zainab Safwan Kamal Al-Din.
The seminar portrayed the novel as a literary epic embodying the reality of Russian society during the Napoleonic Wars. Tolstoy depicted war as a blind machine that devours everything, while presenting peace as a state of construction and unity, stemming from the strength of the human spirit.
Additionally, the seminar addressed Tolstoy’s realism in character development, from the upper to the lower classes, describing events as the inevitable outcome of the course of history.
Participants emphasized the literary and philosophical value of the novel and its importance in understanding societal transformations during periods of war and peace, highlighting the role of literature in providing profound human and historical insights.
