A Seminar in Islamic Sciences Discusses the Impact of Religious Awareness in Reducing Suicide

The College of Islamic Sciences at the University of Samarra organized a scientific seminar titled “The Impact of Religious Awareness and Effective Communication in Reducing Suicidal Ideation,” presented by Prof. Dr. (Mohammed Ahmed Shihab) and Assoc. Prof. Dr. (Itimad Ismail Jassim).

The organizers of the seminar sought to emphasize the importance of the role of faith in enhancing “psychological resilience,” and to affirm the sanctity of life and self-preservation, considering it a divine trust (Amana); as the soul belongs to God and may not be squandered.

Dr. Mohammed pointed out that any action taken regarding the self without the permission of its Owner—Glory be to Him—is a transgression against the Creator’s right and an unauthorized act, citing the Almighty’s saying: {And do not throw [yourselves] with your own hands into destruction}.
At the same time, he emphasized the importance of refuting the idea of “personal freedom” in ending one’s life, which has been promoted in contemporary Western civilization; rather, it is a flagrant assault, a major crime, and one of the greatest sins.

Meanwhile, Dr. Itimad added that some preventive approaches integrate the spiritual and faith-based aspects of the individual with psychological and social skills to protect them from despair, treat psychological conditions, and eliminate the causes of suicidal thoughts, such as drug addiction, alcohol abuse, social isolation, lack of purpose, and lack of support.

In the same context, the seminar concluded by proving that strong faith and religious awareness represent an individual’s protection and shield from inflicting harm and destruction upon themselves. It also highlighted the role of effective communication in detection and prevention by encouraging society to listen to and contain others, as it represents the most powerful weapon to confront the phenomenon of suicide, as well as the importance of awareness and guidance in child-rearing.
