Architectural Engineering Seminar Highlights Environmental Impact of Sustainable Materials in Construction

The Department of Architectural Engineering at the College of Engineering, University of Samarra, presented a scientific seminar titled “Sustainable Materials: Between Local Innovation and Global Recycling.”

The seminar was delivered by two postgraduate students (Master’s) from the College, Taibah Sadiq Mahmood and Fatima Iyad Ibrahim, and supervised by Dr. Suhail Najim Abdullah.

The seminar included an explanation of the concept of sustainable materials and their role in reducing the environmental impact of the construction sector.

It also provided a comprehensive overview of the latest trends in local innovation for producing eco-friendly materials and utilizing recycling, which is an effective tool for lowering construction costs and reducing carbon emissions.

The seminar referred to a range of local and global examples that embodied real-world applications in this field, such as experiments using enhanced clay, green concrete, and hybrid materials that combine natural and manufactured elements.

The two students emphasized the importance of localizing the environmental industry in Iraq and encouraging research into the development of sustainable materials using local resources such as clay, paper waste, or industrial ash.

This aligns with the principles of the circular economy and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

It is noteworthy that the seminar witnessed an interactive scientific discussion among the college’s professors and students, which generated new ideas for utilizing sustainable materials in the academic projects of students and researchers. At the same time, they stressed the importance of linking sustainability with local identity in architectural design.
