Seminar at the College of Education for Human Sciences Highlights the Importance of Sustainable Urban Planning
The College of Education for Human Sciences at Samarra University organized a scientific seminar titled: “Proper City Planning: The Foundation of Sustainable Urban Development,” presented by a group of faculty members from the Department of Geography.
The seminar began by clarifying the concept of proper urban planning as a cornerstone of sustainable development. It highlighted its role in organizing land use, achieving a balance between population growth and resources, and its contribution to enhancing the quality of life in cities.
Furthermore, the seminar focused on integrating spatial, economic, social, and environmental dimensions within the applications of urban geography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
On another note, the lecturers explained the basic principles of urban planning, emphasizing the optimal use of land and the balanced distribution of urban activities to curb random expansion (urban sprawl) while improving transportation networks and access to services.
Regarding the environmental dimension, the discussion stressed the necessity of allocating green spaces, managing natural resources, and reducing pollution. It also called for adopting modern environmental standards in the design of residential and industrial neighborhoods in alignment with sustainable development goals.
In a different context, the presenters touched upon the role of technological tools in supporting urban planning, pointing out the importance of spatial analysis and geographic databases in assessing urban growth and predicting future transformations.
