The College of Administration and Economics Organizes an Awareness Seminar on the Role of Universities in Combating Drug Spread

The College of Administration and Economics at the University of Samarra organized an awareness seminar in collaboration with the Community Police in Samarra, titled “The Role of Iraqi Universities in Combating the Scourge of Drugs,” delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Abdul Salam Ahmed, Dean of the College.

The seminar aimed to shed light on the pivotal role that Iraqi universities can play in curbing the spread of drugs among youth and within society. It focused on raising awareness about the dangers of drugs, which is the first step in combating drug use. This includes integrating educational programs and regular lectures that clarify the health, psychological, and social effects of drugs. Additionally, it emphasized enhancing scientific research in universities to study the causes of drug proliferation, its impact on society, and practical solutions to mitigate it.

The Dean highlighted the significant role of student activities in reducing this dangerous phenomenon, stressing the importance of cooperation with security and health authorities. He called for collaboration between universities and the Ministries of Health and Interior to develop joint programs that include awareness campaigns and addiction treatment.

In the same context, the seminar’s speaker recommended the necessity of launching continuous awareness campaigns on campus and incorporating the subject of drug prevention into academic curricula to educate students. Furthermore, partnerships with civil society organizations were suggested to implement preventive programs, alongside providing advisory centers within universities to support students psychologically and socially.

It is noteworthy that this seminar was conducted in response to the recommendations of the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers to combat the spread of drugs. It provided an opportunity for academics to clarify the role of universities in awareness and education, emphasizing the responsibility of educational institutions in collaborating with awareness centers to address societal issues.
