Two Faculty Members from the College of Applied Sciences Publish Research in a Journal Indexed in Scopus and Clarivate
Dr. Rafid Majid Mukhlif and Assist. Lect. Ahmed Ayoub Ibrahim, faculty members at the College of Applied Sciences, have published a scientific research paper in the journal Applied Surface Science, which is classified in the first quartile (Q1) in both Scopus and Clarivate indices.
The research, titled \”Biogenically Synthesized Co₃O₄ Spinel Coatings with Engineered Surface Properties for Anti-Biofilm Resistance: A Study of Surface Alterations Post-Biofilm Formation Using XPS and Hemocompatibility Evaluation,\” presents an advanced concept in the field of nanomaterials. It goes beyond the green synthesis of cobalt oxide nanoparticles (Co₃O₄) using an extract of the plant Leucaena leucocephala, extending to the development of smart nanocoatings capable of resisting bacterial adhesion and preventing biofilm formation.
The study aimed to develop innovative bioactive nanocoatings of cobalt oxide (Co₃O₄) using green synthesis based on Leucaena leucocephala extract, while investigating the relationship between the chemical surface properties of the nanomaterial and its performance in preventing bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation.
The study was distinguished by its use of advanced surface analysis techniques, most notably X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), to track changes occurring on the coating surface before and after exposure to bacteria. This provided a precise explanation of the mechanism behind biofilm resistance, while also demonstrating the coating\’s efficacy and biocompatibility, positioning it as a promising candidate for medical device applications and anti-infective surfaces.
