The University of Samarra Discusses the Social Stigma of Recovered Drug Addicts
The College of Agriculture in Balad District hosted an awareness seminar titled “The Social Stigma of Recovered Drug Addicts and Its Impact on Reintegration into Society.” The seminar was presented by Assistant Lecturer Yusuf Ali Muhammad and Assistant Lecturer Tulin Khalid Ibrahim.
The session aimed to shed light on the negative effects of social stigma on recovered individuals and the societal harm that extends to their families. Ali emphasized the importance of raising awareness and educating the community about its crucial role in supporting recovered addicts, encouraging them to build a new life, and freeing them from the burden of stigma.
For her part, Tulin stressed the need for collective efforts from reform institutions, along with educational and community organizations, to promote a culture of tolerance and eliminate social stigma, fostering a society free from addiction.
The seminar concluded with a key recommendation: Addicts are sometimes merely victims, lured into drug use through deceptive means and false pretenses. Some fall into addiction due to medical prescriptions. Supporting their recovery and refraining from stigmatization can help normalize rehabilitation and encourage more individuals to seek treatment.
